Backups

The Backups group of the account panel: download the backups your hosting provider makes of your account, and put back files, a database or mail from them.

Backups are made and kept by your hosting provider, usually every night; the oldest are removed after a while. There is no "back up now" here. A backup shows the day after it is made. If the backup server does not answer, the page says so: try again later. (For the admin side, see Backups.)

Backups

Each backup of your account, with when it was made. Download gives one .tar.gz file with your files, mail, databases and settings. Keep it somewhere safe: it holds your passwords too (as hashes).

Putting things back

A restore runs in the background, one at a time for your account; you can leave the page and come back to see how it went. Nothing you have now is lost: what a restore replaces or deletes is kept in ~/backup-restores/.

Restore files

Choose the backup and a file or folder (a folder brings back what is inside it, sub-folders too; empty = your whole home folder, apart from mail). Then how:

Put back only what is missingFiles that are in the backup but not in your account now come back. Nothing you have now is changed.
Merge, the backup winsThe backup's files replace the ones with the same name; files that are only in your account now stay.
Make it exactly as in the backupFiles added since the backup are deleted and changed ones go back to the backup's version. Not for your whole home folder.

Restore a database

Choose the backup and the database. A database that is no longer on your account is made again. Before anything changes, a copy of the database as it is now is saved in ~/backup-restores/. Then:

  • Put back the backup's tables: each table in the backup replaces the same table now; tables made since stay.
  • Make it exactly as in the backup: the database is emptied first, so tables made since the backup go too.
  • Into a new database: the database stays as it is, and the backup goes into a new one beside it, with the name you give and, if you choose one, a database user that may use it.

Restore email

Choose the backup and a mailbox. A mailbox deleted since comes back too, with its old password.

  • Put back missing messages: messages deleted since the backup come back, in their folders, and deleted folders come back. Nothing is duplicated or taken out.
  • Make the mailbox exactly as in the backup: messages that came in or were moved since are taken out (kept in ~/backup-restores/), and changed folders go back.
