Files

The Files group of the account panel: a file manager for your home folder, what takes up your disk space, FTP logins and a terminal in the browser.

Everything here runs as your account, with your own permissions, inside your home folder. A few folders at the top of it hold your sites and mail and cannot be renamed, moved or deleted from the panel: public_html, www, mail, logs, tmp, etc, .ssh and apps.

File manager

  • Upload files, or drop them on the page. Choose whether files already there are replaced.
  • New folder, New file, and edit text files in the built-in editor.
  • Select files to Move, Compress into an archive or Delete them. Unpack an archive into a new folder or into the folder it is in.
  • Permissions: read, write and open/run for owner, group and others. Usual: 644 for files, 755 for folders.
  • Hidden files shows the ones starting with a dot, such as .htaccess. A filter box narrows a big folder.
  • Downloads always arrive as a file to save, never opened in the panel.

Disk usage

Your disk space against your package's limit, and what takes it up: each folder (open one to see inside it), your mail, and the things you can usually clear to make room:

  • Mail: usually the biggest part. Empty Trash and Spam, or delete old mail with attachments, in webmail.
  • Backups and archives: old .zip, .tar.gz and .sql files left in the home folder or a site's folder. Download them, then delete them here.
  • Caches and logs: a site's cache folders (WordPress: wp-content/cache) and old logs can be deleted; they are made again when needed.

Databases are kept apart from your files: their size is shown, but they do not count toward your disk space. A big folder can take a minute to measure.

FTP accounts

An FTP user can upload and change files in one folder of your account with an FTP app, for example a web designer working on public_html. It sees only its folder and what is inside it, and the files it uploads belong to your account.

  • Choose a name (lowercase letters, digits, dot, dash and underscore), a password and the folder; it is made if it does not exist. Empty = your whole home folder. The login is name@yourdomain.
  • Your account itself can also log in with FTP, with your account password, and sees everything.
  • In FileZilla, WinSCP or Cyberduck choose FTP with explicit TLS, then log in with the full login, including the part after @.

FTP accounts need the server's FTP server (the FTP server add-on); without it the page says to ask your hosting provider. SFTP with an SSH key (SSH access) is safer than FTP, because FTP apps usually save passwords where malware can find them.

Terminal

A shell in the browser, for accounts with shell access. With a jailed shell it sees only your own home folder.

  • Copy: select text, then Ctrl+Shift+C (Cmd+C on a Mac). Paste: Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+V).
  • Closing the page ends the shell; programs started with nohup, screen or tmux keep running.
  • Up to 3 terminals at a time. Signing out of the panel, or a session that ends, closes them.
